Sakura and ume blossom jewelry, some with the addition of ume-inspired leaves, were born from a fascination with traditional Japanese techniques and the spirit of California innovation.
My interest in tiny things stems from exposure to Japanese miniature arts and crafts. From tiny, detailed dioramas, to very tiny paper cranes, to European fairytale inspired folk arts, I find joy in the small things and details.
Kanzashi are traditional Japanese hair ornaments. They are usually seen in the form of long hair pints. While researching obon-themed hair pieces, I came across some antique metal kanzashi.
After sketching out different ideas to create a modern take on the kanzashi forms, I started hand-cutting metal pieces and fusing them together to create a series of flowers.
